La Ribera

Pigs legs hanging from the ceiling, rows of giant pots filled with olives, fridges full of cooked meats and cheese, crates upon crates of Rioja…. have we whetted your appetite yet?

Ok well wipe the dribble from your chin and come with Porktie as we go old school grocery shopping in El Born.

100 hundred years ago, the Mercat del Born was the beating heart of Barcelona’s food industry. The market may have sadly closed its doors some 40 years ago, but the legacy of fresh local produce is still alive and kicking just a few yards from where the old market once stood.

Keeping El Born’s fresh food fire burning is La Ribera – a family run shop that is quite simply traditional grocery shopping at its best!

Forget the overpriced Paella and shocking Sangria served up on Las Ramblas –this place offers a true taste of Spain. With over 90% of the products on the shelves sourced locally, La Ribera’s has spent the last 70 years earning the reputation of one of the finest local grocers in the city - probably most renowned for its Bacaloa fish and fantastic selection of olives

Since opening its doors back in 1941, La Ribera has gradually built strong relationships with the local bar and restaurant owners in the area – and today they are one the largest suppliers to the scores of eateries dotted around the winding streets of El Born. So, even if you don’t find yourself visiting the shop in person, if you’re dining out in the area there’s a pretty good chance something on your plate will have come from La Ribera.
