Summer in Barcelona. 36 degree heat and endless days of sunshine - perfect conditions for...............(insert your answer here)-

Some of you may have gone for “spending the day soaking up the sun’s rays on the beach”. Or perhaps, “enjoying an evening stroll and a refreshing cerveza as the sun slowly sets”. Well the answer that we were looking for is “sweating”. Yes, perfect conditions for sweating.

To put it simply, sweating is a method used by the body to regulate temperature - the hotter the weather, the more sweat is produced. So with temperatures in the mid thirties, this spells (or should I say smells) bad news for a summer in Barcelona.

There are many deodorants and antiperspirants available to help control this pungent pest, but unfortunately many of these become ineffective as we reach the hottest stages of a scorching summers’ day, leaving a ghastly pong of body odour lurking in the air.

Fortunately, rising above the debris of ineffective aerosol cans lying on the perspiration drench streets of Barcelona is the hero we have been waiting for. The hero that can keep Cataluña smelling as pleasant as possible is called ‘PerspireX’.

It’s possible that the understated packaging and standardised ‘roll-on’ appearance of PerspireX could lead you to the perception that this is ‘just another antiperspirant’….well appearances can be deceiving. I was first introduced to a world without body odour over 2 years ago, when, on the recommendation of my father (existing user), I picked up the curious looking blue and white package from the antiperspirant section of my local chemist and marched to the counter with the premise that ‘its worth a try’.

At this stage I feel the need to point out that I have never felt that I had a severe sweat problem. I did however often feel slightly uncomfortably when the light blue shirt I was wearing on a hot summers day had been infiltrated by a dark blue wave, sweeping from my armpits, leaving an embarrassing and all too visible, damp trail in its wake. So that night, having read the enclosed instructions with my sceptical specs perched on the edge on my nose, I applied the roll-on underneath my armpits shortly before I retired to bed. Once the moisture left from the roll-on had dried, I counted my sheep and fell fast asleep.

The next day, as any self respecting irritating son would, I scoured my wardrobe for the most dangerous colour of t-shirt I could find, I wanted a real shade of ‘sweat magnet’ in a bid to prove my father wrong and challenge the blind faith he had developed since he converted to PerspireX weeks earlier. So I donned an unforgiving light grey t shirt and made my way out into the heat of the Catalan streets on a blistering morning in mid July.

Having encountered a predictably stressful summer’s day in the city involving the usual hectic rush around the office, as well as sizzling spells of metro travel and tourist dodging, I fully expected my arrival home to be greeted by a slender murky whiff wafting up from under my t-shirt. Indeed I was almost resigned to discovering a faintly darkened area in the under arm region. I found nothing. Nothing but a completely dry area, exuding the smell of the soap I had used that very morning to shower with. The only disagreeable smell that my nostrils could pick up was the whiff of humble pie that I was undoubtedly about to eat in a conversation with my father.

2 years on from that initial PerspireX application, I have never looked back. As I mentioned, I have never considered myself to be an overly smelly or sweaty person, but having tried PerspireX I’m not sure how I ever coped before. So powerful are the effects of using this astounding antiperspirant, that an application is only needed once every 3 to 4 days. You pop it on before bed, rinse it off in the morning and that really is the clear, straight and stress free road to a sweat free life.

Surviving in the city during the summer months can be (to put it politely) a rather smelly experience. Getting to work, eating out, doing the shopping and generally any activity where other people are present can create an unpleasant situation for your nostrils. But if we all used PerspireX, Barcelona would undoubtedly be a much sweeter smelling city in the summer months.
