Remember the drama that took place underground in Chile last year? Well after some digging of our own, Porktie has unearthed Barcelona´s very own Chilean success story that we´re now bringing to the surface. Join us for the next stop on the Latin Line, as we take our very own underground capsule (well a Metro) and head to Pebret to become one of Barcelona´s new Chilean Diners. (Don’t worry, the mining puns stop here)

It’s fair to say that Chilean cuisine is perhaps not as well known to Barcelona diners as that of some of the other larger Latin American countries. Not surprising though when you consider that Chile is the furthest away of all the countries featured in this issue (over 11,000 km from BCN), and that native Chileans account for just 1.3% of Catalonia´s foreign population.

With the odds stacked against them, miles from home with a tiny expat crowd to cater for, Pebret´s 3 Chilean owners decided that in order to make their restaurant a success in Barcelona they would need to give their Chilean restaurant a distinct Catalan twist.

This fusion of styles began with the name. They took ´Pebre` (Typical Chilean sauce/ condiment made from spicy peppers, onion, tomato, coriander and garlic. Commonly served with meat and bread) and mixed it with ´Pebrot` (Catalan word for Pepper) to create their very own Catalan-sounding Chilean restaurant - ´Pebret`.

The merging of cultures continues in the kitchen. The menu is a mix of Mediterranean dishes and Chilean classics – all cooked up by Pebret´s 2 kitchen staff (one Chilean and the other Catalan of course). To sample the true Latin American experience, you should choose from one of two following typically Chilean dishes – Pastel de Choclo (corn pie with meat) or Chupe de Mariscos (Shellfish Casserole).

After enjoying some typically Chilean cuisine, what better way to wash it all down than with a glass of Chile´s national drink – the Pisco Sour. This drink is so popular in Chile that on May 15th each year the whole country raises a glass (or a few) to celebrate National Pisco Day. Pisco is a 40% proof, clear brandy made from grapes and is drunk in Chile like its going out of fashion. The Pisco Sour is created by adding lime juice, egg whites and sugar to the brandy to form a potent but delicious Chilean cocktail.

The dining area is full of individual features and really caters for the funky, eclectic crowd of modern day Barcelona. Keep an eye out for the bar that’s entirely covered in wine corks, the table disguised as a bed, the wonderfully lit wine rack made from second hand pallets, and finally the bathroom tiles!
